An Interview with the Operations Manager
Operations Manager, Stephen, shares his career highlights from 16 years at the hotel as well as some top restaurant recommendations!
How long have you worked at Mercure Glasgow?
I started work at Mercure Glasgow on the 19th December 2000. Back then it was called the Jarvis Ingram Hotel.
What changes have you seen over the years at the hotel?
6 General Managers, 3 rebrands and a full refurbishment.
What has been your career highlight so far?
Over the years faces have come and gone, but the team have always been fantastic. The industry has changed and evolved so much over recent times and I have seen so many changes. Being able to adapt to the ever changing needs of the guests is key. I have learned a lot and gained so much in terms of career development. If you had said to me back when I started that I would be doing this job, I wouldn’t have believed it!
Describe your typical day for us?
Every day is different and the variety is exciting. No two days are the same and that’s what I like about the job.
What do you love about living and working in Glasgow?
A highland boy arriving in the big city was a bit of a culture shock but I love the whole city life and Glasgow offers everything. Glasgow has a vibe about it that’s hard to describe, it feels right and it has a very interesting history.
If you’re eating out in Glasgow where would you recommend?
We have a varied choice of cuisine right on our door step. From Corinthian to Sapporo Teppanyaki, there’s something for everyone. My favourite is Mercado – great choice of Spanish tapas.
